Thom Felicia Rug for Safavieh

Interior designers are like movie stars. When they are hot you see them everywhere. Then a few years later they just disappear.

Thom Felicia is definitely hot now. He has a wide range of licensed products as we've mentioned in previous post--ranging from Kravet fabrics to furniture for Vanguard and now rugs for Safavieh.

His rug collection is actually very affordable. Very young and hip too. A 6 x 9 rug is about $600. Very reasonable don't you think?

Here are some samples:

Easy Ways to Give the Illusion of Space in a Small Home

Homes come in large and small, and the reality is, larger homes are easier to make design choices in right? Wrong, small interiors can be challenging, but that’s what makes them cozy and personable. You can give the illusion of space by following these simple guidelines.

INTERIOR COLORS: Use light, neutral colors to give the illusion of space and airiness. Whites, beige’s, grays, and muted pastels can make your small space feel bigger. By tricking the eye, walls will seem to disappear, rather than stand out.

ACCENT WALLS: Consider colors that are a darker hue of the already used neutral color. For example beige walls, with a darker taupe accent wall will still help to make the walls blend with one another. When using darker colors, use them on window walls, or walls with several openings. The darker color will actually seem lighter, because of the window light and breakup of doorways, entryways, and hallways. Try to place furniture in front of accent walls to also “eat up” some of the dark color of accent walls. Remember, the lighter the color the more space that will be felt in the room.

MIRRORS: You’ve always heard that mirrors and reflection enlarge a space right? What about the placement of mirrors? Use a mirror at the end of a hallway to give the illusion of length. Place a mirror on the opposite side of a window wall with a view to reflect light, and the beautiful view. In bedrooms, replace sliding closet doors with mirrored doors. In bathrooms, replace a small vanity mirror with a mirror that extends along the full length of the wall. In kitchens, use a reflective backsplash to give the illusion of space.

FURNITURE: Use multi-purpose furniture that provides storage, function, and décor. For example, a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table and seating for guests is ideal. Dining room tables which have storage adjacent or below can double as a home office. When buying a couch, opt for one that can double as a sleeping area like a futon. Fold-out couches, and daybeds can also be used in home offices to convert for overnight guests.

NATURAL LIGHT: In as many ways possible, maximize the quantity of emitting natural light. At windows, use light colored fabrics, and sheers to diffuse harsh bright light. Consider having a skylight or sun diffuser tube installed in the ceiling. This way light can illuminate the small space and open it up. If you don’t have windows, use brighter lighting and colors to bring warmth and brightness into your small space.

STORAGE: In kitchens and bathrooms, take advantage of under counter and cabinet organization tools. Don’t forget items can be hung on the inside of cabinet doors, and drawers organizers will help put everything ‘in its place’. Don’t forget space on top of your cabinets, refrigerator, and back of the bathroom door. In the bedroom, take advantage of space under the bed, and over doorways. Shelving over doorways for books is a unique and decorative way of adding the illusion of space. Use vertical book shelves to maximize storage and display decorative collectibles.

Your home is what you make it, focus on the quality and not how much space you lack.

Creative Design Idea: Desk Made From Briefcase

When first seeing the photos of this unusual briefcase desk, we hoped it was made from recycled materials. But apparently it was created using leather. All in all, the idea is interesting and worth showcasing. We don’t know if this desk was meant for nomadic souls and wanderers, or if you can pack it up once you are done working. Still, its practicability is obvious: the improvised luggage can be used as drawers for storage and there are definitely a lot of things one could store in six briefcases. The opening system is fun and could remind one of traveling every time a drawer is opened. Its color choice is interesting, not too sober, nor too playful, just fine for an office with a personality

Original Bookcase Design Inspired by a Tree

This beautiful indoor tree comes from Twentyfirst and could make for a fantastic bookcase. Its design is simple, yet completely unusual. “Wintertree” could be placed in a airy and spacious living room design with a contemporary touch. It comes in both white and dark brown, which are unpretentious colors, easy to integrate in almost any type of simple interior. We really like the fist photo, where too “wintertrees” are placed together and we think this is a viable solution in a large home, in order to replace a larger bookcase. Practical and original, this indoor furniture tree can not only store books, but a bunch of other things also. It is all up to the creativity of the customer. What would you store in it?

Ingenious Contemporary Crib from i29 Interior Architects

Here is an ingenious and very practical idea for a contemporary crib. Not long ago, i29 Interior Architects completed the design of an apartment in Amsterdam. With a simple color palette, featuring wooden finishes and white furniture, this home is truly charming. One of the its focal points is a cool semi-open cabinet featured in the photos below. The advantages of such a design are numerous. With a common cabinet, most people never know where things are and keep opening all the doors before finding what they were looking for. In this situation, it is easy to have a look inside and find things a lot faster. The small openings also help with the grabbing. Moreover, this special cabinet is very aesthetic, bringing a plus of originality to an interior. This idea can be applied to almost all rooms, as storage space is needed in the entire home. What do you think?

Flat Renovation in Barcelona, Based on Strong Visual Effects

We thought it was time to showcase another flat renovation on Freshome in order to give you some fresh ideas. From studio Miel Arquitectos comes an apartment makeover which we find to be quite original. The project was named “Santpere47″ and has a lot of interesting features. Golden lines and circles create a playful wall design which is very inviting to observe. The ceiling is particularly captivating, as the pattern is unusual and reminds one of royalty chambers. Storage space is provided unconventionally: there is a bookcase under the stairs and a few spots within the walls where objects can be placed. The lighting system in this apartment is also worth a second look: the pendant lamps are subtle and elegant and we were impressed by the staircase lamps. The decorating items are in complete harmony with the overall feel of the home. And if you look closely, you will also see the “Drop XL” coat hanger which we presented in a previous post called 25 of the Most Creative Wall Hook Designs. Let us know if you recognize other designs as well.-via Platforma Arquitectura

Fashionable Blue Sofa and Armchair : “Quilt”

This fancy new set of blue furniture truly fascinated us. “Quilt” comes from Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and brings with it originality and a fresh look. The navy blue is a very inspired color, as it is not too simple nor too flashy. This makes the set integrate well in a classic environment, but in a modern one as well. The unusual upholstered collection comes in various dimensions and after a little research we found out that red and black versions are also available. The sofa looks extremely comfortable and so does the armchair, due to the feet-rest addition. But we think in this case, aesthetics comes first, as this is the type of sofa one could proudly display in a fashionable living room. We are looking forward to your opinions on this set.
